In the past 2 years my first website has got more than 5,000,000 visits and the number of visitors increases almost every month.
The question you should ask yourself if you want to make your website popular is “Does my website deserves to be popular?”
Making a website popular is a hard task that can never happen overnight or in few weeks, but in order to make sure that your efforts won’t be in vain you must first know whether the website you are promoting has a real potential of becoming popular or not.
Does your website deserve to be popular?
Look at other popular websites and try to think of the reasons that made them popular. The conclusion you will reach is that most of these websites provide some kind of benefit that some people can’t live without.
Does your website provide such a benefit?
Are you giving some kind of a product or a service that makes life easier?
Are you providing real valuable information?
Is your website original or is it copied from another website?

If the answers to these questions weren’t positive then you should forget about marketing for now and focus on modifying your website until it becomes really worthy of being popular.
Websites with unique content can become popular
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel but you can use introduce better wheels!!
When I made my first website I didn’t invent self help but I introduced self help in an easier way than other competitors and that’s why it became popular.

Even if you love your website you must look at it from the perspective of other people. Once you start thinking in the terms of their needs, wants and desires you will be able to modify your website so that it appeals to them.
If you love ice cream but everybody loves chocolate then opening an ice cream shop won’t be profitable at all.
In short your website must be unique and it must satisfy an unmet need that a large group of people have in order for it to become popular.
Basicly, to earn from you website, you need to have visitors constantly visiting your site. There are a number of ways to do this.First, you can use SEO or Search Engine Optimization. Here, you do not have to pay for your optimization. However, this takes quite a time to work on. Sometimes instead of going to your intended site, users are redirected. Another thing is that when people cannot find what they are looking for, they will leave.
Another thing is to use PCCs or pay per click methods like Google Adwords. By using these, there are fewer chances of people to leave because you will be directing them to the correct site. You must have knowledge in order to do this. It is also not easy to set this up. It may be necessary for you to attend a PPC course or research online on how to work on adwords. It is also important to track your visitors so you will know that you are getting just the right type of visitors to your site.
Whichever it is you will use, do not forget to measure conversions. This means that a user decided to take action on your site. This may be done by letting them sign up for newsletters, making a sale, downloading a document or a file. After being able to generate traffic and getting more than enough visitors to your site, you will soon be able to determine if you are making money and also determine your return of investment.

Steps
- Get yourself signed up to popular websites. To get your website/webshow known, you need to get yourself known on the Internet too. Create a Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Youtube, etc. channel and mention your website on there. This is smart so whoever looks at your page on those websites will see YOURS linked on it.
- Go to famous/popular people's websites and advertise. Go to someone popular's fansite or some website with tons of views and leave a comment saying something like, "Hey, watch my webshow/go to my website ________" so people who also go on the website will see it and get curious.
- Tell the public about your website/show. Go to school/work and subtly mention in a conversation about your wesite/webshow. Be like, "Oh what are you doing later? Me? Well I'm just going to be updating my website/webshow _______."
- Make merchandise. Make a t-shirt or something [for yourself] that has your website/webshow name on it and walk around a busy store/place wearing it. To make people more interested in you and your website, do something wacky while wearing your shirt, like burst out into song or do a dance so people will be like "Wow, she/he's crazy. I wanna see his/her website/show now."
- Go to local TV stations and advertise. Like on Good Morning America, they film part of the show live outside, by the crowd. Make a poster and go to a place where you know you can get on TV or something and hold it up.
- Put an ad in the local paper. This might work, though it'll cost a little bit of money.
- Go to a sports event/concert and hold up poster. Baseball games always put the camera on random people with posters, just mention a team playing on the sign to show some team spirit.
- MAKE YOUR WEBSITE/SHOW CREATIVE! If it is awesome and cool looking, people will be attracted to it on their own. Also, give your website/show a cool name too, something that'll be remembered.
- Keep it up! Once you have more viewers, keep advertising to get more viewers and keep the ones you have now.
